My self-recorded debut EP as Zoo Keys, "Violent Ends," is now live on BandCamp, marking the culmination of a tumultuous several months of emotional setbacks, loss, and self-discovery as I went through the process of recording it on my own in the dark of my basement throughout the winter months.
Several people have inquired about the EP's title (an allusion to Friar Laurence's words from Shakespeare); a name that I found fitting, as everything in life has a price, and the price of happiness is typically offset with a counteracting dose of despair. These six songs were recorded during a period in which I felt myself atoning for my own hubris and failures, despite my incessant intentions to always be a humble, loving, and benevolent person. The joy I felt when this band got off the ground had been replaced by the loneliness of having to start over by myself. The joy of making music had been replaced with the pressures of getting the songs off of my chest. The love I felt for others was replaced by the overwhelming sense of their absence and the sting of the cold on my hands with every drum hit, guitar strum, and button click.
It is my hope that this release will resonate with some of the people who have followed my musical journey from quiet drummer to the songwriter I seek to be today, and that this will serve as a milepost for my life on my way to new things and the "violent delights" that I hope to once again discover. Thank you for listening.
